Shortly after the conclusion of the battles from the early Civil War,
the Medical Department of the United States Army realized they were ill prepared to deal with the devastation that would be the outcome when two armies meet on the field of battle. The lack of experienced surgeons, adiquate hospitals, and reliable transportation would hinder the attempts of the medical staff to see all the wounded received proper care and treatment.
The effects of these battles demanded the medical department would grow and improve. Wounded soldiers would be given healing chances by improved surgical skills of surgeons. Disease would be battled with modern sanitation practices and newfangled medications. Surgeons would begin practicing medicine based on science and research.
The 27th N.J. Field Hospital brings to life the work of the United States Army Medical Department. With diverse means we strive to educate and keep the legacy of these men and women alive so that their work will never be forgotten.
